Facts you Need to Know
- Currently, there are less than 1,000 breeding pairs on Earth which is the smallest breeding and population size of any penguin species.
- The main reason we are endangered is due to El Niño, an ocean current that brings in warm water and diminishes our food supply.
- We have a lifespan of 15-20 years, but most of us die much earlier from predation or food shortages caused by changes in the current.
- We live in the western part of the Galapagos Islands which is farther north than all other penguins on Earth!
- Typically we live in burrows or crevices of old lava flow.
- We feed off of small fish such as sardines and mullet.
- We go swimming in groups to hunt our prey.
- Mortality is higher in females, causing a decreased birth rate.
- We are preyed on by killer whales, sharks, and sea lions.
